Danny MonizContinuing where Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) left off, Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) sees The Resistance striving to stay ahead of The First Order. Rey seeks guidance from Jedi-in-hiding Luke Skywalker so she can learn the ways of The Force, and defected storm-trooper FN-2187 (Finn) will have his faith in The Resistance tested as his past with The First Order comes to haunt not only him, but also threatens the very foundations of the galaxy's future.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)Following the battle of Starkiller Base, General Leia Organa leads Resistance forces to flee D'Qar when a First Order fleet arrives. Poe Dameron leads a costly counterattack that destroys a First Order dreadnought, but after the Resistance escapes to hyperspace, the First Order tracks them and attacks the Resistance convoy. Kylo Ren, Leia's son, hesitates to fire on the lead Resistance ship after sensing his mother's presence, but his wing-men destroy the bridge, killing most of the Resistance leadership and incapacitating Leia, who survives by using the Force. Disapproving of new leader Vice Admiral Holdo's passive strategy, Poe helps Finn, BB-8, and mechanic Rose Tico embark on a secret mission to disable the First Order's tracking device..

When Fin and Rose are caught and standing in the hangar, a bunch of storm troopers are marching. The marching sound does not match the footsteps.Character error
Finn and Rose are in a hurry to save the Resistance by fetching the code breaker, but for some reason, freeing the racing alien horses is important enough to delay saving the day.Character error
Rey doesn't remember her past and her parents. A nine years old girl definitely wouldn't have forgotten a story like hers ten years later.Character error
The level of uncomfortable feel that Rey shows when she sees a naked torso is strange from somebody who grew up in a desert.Continuity
When Finn is trying to board the escape pod, he places his bag outside of the pod. When Rose stuns him into the pod, his bag is inside.Continuity
Just before a Praetorian Guard puts Rey into a headlock, the guard is holding a vibro-arbir blade in each hand. In the same shot, only a few seconds later, the blade in the guard's left hand has vanished behind Rey's back, and is never seen again.Continuity
When Poe gets permission to leave the bridge and runs towards the X-Wing bay, several pilots on the bridge follow him, including the alien C'ai Threnalli. However, immediately after we see C'ai run out of frame, there is a reaction shot of Finn with C'ai still standing at a console in the background.Continuity
On the way toward the opening bombing run, Poe's helmet mic is extended straight out. In mid-sentence, the camera cuts to the opposite side of his face and the the mic has been re-positioned 90-degrees now properly located under his chin.Continuity
Close-ups of Leia's hands show longer, manicured nails, immediately followed by unmanicured, ragged, much shorter nails. (When Poe reaches out to her, and when Luke gives her the dice, among other instances.)Continuity
In the first shot of the scene where Luke talks to R2D2 on the Millennium Falcon, R2D2's head turns towards Luke. In the next reverse shot it is still facing away, then turns around again in the next shot.Continuity
In one of the first scenes Finn is talking to Admiral Ackbar and they're facing the window, while in the next cut Admiral Ackbar is facing another side.Continuity
At some point, Rey cries and tears are running down her face. The line of her left tear disappears and reappears between the shots.Continuity
When the fathiers stampede out the stable, a guard rushes into the corner of the room near a pipe. In the next shot the guard is no longer there.Continuity
When Rey arrived at Snoke's ship, Kylo Ren noticeably has a visible mustache and a small beard on his chin. It was not in the previous scene (shirtless scene) or the next scene in the throne room.Continuity
During the conversation between Kylo and Rey, the distance between their faces varies.Factual errors
The First Order flagship was firing at the Raddus. The rounds that were fired were traveling in a curved line towards the Raddus; whether missiles or energy bolts, the rounds, being fired in space and outside of a gravity field, should only travel in a straight line.Miscellaneous
Considering the size of the galaxy far, far away (or any galaxy for that matter), the opposing armies seem weirdly small for a galaxy-level war. Neither fleet seems big enough to conquer a single system, let alone a galaxy.Miscellaneous
For some reason, the 'blow smoke from the tip of a gun's barrel' western cliche move exists in the Star Wars universe. Even though the smoke from the barrel of blasters to blow does not (as gunpowder is unknown in this galaxy, so no gun provides any smoke).Miscellaneous
The Rebel speeders on Crait pull a red cloud behind them, the non-verbal equivalent of a 'PLEASE SHOOT HERE' flag. Whoever originally chose this type of speeders to use on this planet in whatever time period was a total idiot.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
Paige is seen inside her ship with the doors open to allow the bombs to be dropped out of the ship. She does not have any kind of oxygen mask or supply, despite this sequence being set in space. However, all through the Star Wars films, there are openings into space that do not affect a ship's atmosphere. We see this in a New Hope in the Death Star hangar bays and in The Force Awakens when Poe and Finn steal the TIE Fighter. A thin magnetic shield is used to allow solid matter, but not gasses, to pass through it.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
In the opening sequence the bombers are going to throw bombs on an enemy ship. Since they are in space this won't work. Bombs don't fall down in space. They would need some kind of fire device to fire them down. The canon of this movie confirms that these bombs are magnetic in nature and would therefore be attracted to an enemy spaceship's hull.Plot holes
The rebels cannot jump to light speed because the First Order can track them, but the the First Order cannot catch up to them, they can only keep pace. But, it would be a simple matter for the First Order to have a couple ships go to light speed a short distance and immediately return just ahead of the rebels. The First Order could easily and quickly destroy the Rebels with this simple tactic. The resistance would have been trapped in a flanking attack and overpowered by the First Order.Plot holes
It is stated that Snoke turned Kylo Ren to the dark side while he learned at Luke's Jedi academy (probably through the Force visions Snoke later uses to lure Rey to his ship). Snoke was clearly a threat back then, being a dark side Force user, yet there is no mention about any attempt to stop him previously. Clarification: It is established in Star Wars canon that powerful Dark Side users can use the Force to obscure their presence and their actions from other Force-users.CORRECTION: If Snoke had cloaked himself in the hide of the Force, nobody would mention him by name as the main villain, but even back in EP7, Han Solo mentions him multiple time as the one responsible for Kylo Ren's turn to the dark side.
Plot holes
In Star Wars, droids like R2-D2 and BB-8 can hack through security systems. Finn and Rose take BB-8 with them to their side quest. Why do they need a code breaker? Even configuring BB-8 for the task would be much faster than the detour to the casino.Plot holes
During the low-speed chase, the First Order chases the Rebel fleet until its ships run out of fuel. When they do run out of fuel, the First Order ships are able to overtake them and destroy them. This makes absolutely no sense, as the laws of physics dictate that an object's inertial movement will keep it moving at the same rate absent any external force. The chase is taking place in the vacuum of space, so even if the ships do run out of fuel, they'll continue to move at the same speed they did when their thrusters were functioning properly. There's no friction in space, so until the ships get caught in some massive object's (such as a planet's or star's) gravitational field, they would continue to move at the same speed, potentially for years, decades, centuries, or even millennia.
Revealing mistakes
When the fathiers are let free and running through the club house, there is a closeup of the vibrations in a glass of tea on the table in the hall way. As the camera pulls back, no table in the dining room is disturbed- shakers, vase, etc.Revealing mistakes
In the last battle, the battle speeder fleet view from the back show their shadow front to the right but everything else- AT-M6's, cannon towers, etc show a shadow which should be back right to the speeders.Continuity
If the topsoil of the planet Crait is disturbed, the white sand reveals the red, salty material. When Finn and Rose arrive to the planet, they drag on the ground in the First Order Transport Shuttle before entering through the gate. In a later shot of the gate, the ground appears white and undisturbed.Continuity
In the last scene of light saber battle, after firing like crazy at Luke, the white ground covering is disturbed, and the ground is burned from the heat from the energy blasts. During the duel, the ground is back to white sand again.Continuity
The second time Snoke and Kylo Ren meet in the red room, you can see two black-clothed technicians in the background. Although the door is always in the shot and they are not seen leaving, they suddenly disappear.Continuity
On the Island when Rey falls into the dark hole, she is underwater, but right afterward as she is walking and duplicated, her hair is wet but her clothing is dry.Continuity
When Hux examines the aftermath of the Red Room, he turns his head to look at Kylo Ren unconscious on the floor behind him. In the next shot Hux is facing Ren.Continuity
When Kylo Ren fights Luke Skywalker, his hold on the lightsaber switches from backhand to normal and backhand again between cuts.Continuity
When Kylo Ren kills the last red guard, the right hand of the guard opens. In the next shot, his right hand is a closed fist again.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
Finn and Rose crash right in front of the battering ram cannon, which is shown to be heavily guarded. The enemy forces are under a "no prisoners" order. How were the heroes able to traverse the great distance back the mine's entrance without being attacked? Because Kylo Ren issued an order to have all guns fire on Luke Skywalker, therefore the enemy's attention was divided. Furthermore, it is shown that there is a trench they could take refuge in, which other soldiers are shown using.CORRECTION:
Finn and Rose crash directly in front of the First Order troops and well before Luke shows up. Also the trench that they could have, but didn't, gone to was much closer to the Resistance base than it was to the First Order troops. They would have still had to cross a large amount of open ground before reaching safety.
Incorrectly regarded as goofs
During the slow-mo chase, the rebels lost 2 or 3 support ships that ran out of fuel. It is established that the fuel for sub-light engines vs light-speed engines is separate. So why didn't they send all the support ships at the star destroyers at light speed to destroy them? The last person on board was going to die anyhow. Or why didn't the last capital ship head to the same planet to cover the shuttle retreat, there by lending cover to the shuttles? Clarification: The crews of the Ninka and the medical support ship are shown being evacuated to the Raddus before they run out of fuel, leaving them empty by the time they are destroyed. Other Star Wars media has established that jumping to hyperspace through a solid object is incredibly dangerous to any object in the vicinity, including friendly ships, due to hyper-accelerated shrapnel and the complex physics of hyperspace. Because Holdo had a plan to stealthily land on the planet Crait, which she had presumably communicated to other officers, there was at the time no need to try such a potentially disastrous maneuver, Holdo only took such a risk when the threat of total annihilation was imminent. The evacuation shuttles were already far away from the Raddus when the First Order opened fire on them, making it impossible for the Raddus - a larger, less maneuverable ship with virtually no fuel left - to have reached the shuttles before they were wiped out.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
When Rey wants to hear the real truth from Luke of what has happened to Kylo and him you can see the rain pouring down. But when Rey leaves Luke's planet one shot later, it is not raining anymore and Luke and his clothes have become dry in just a few seconds. However, we know that more than a few seconds has passed because we know it takes a while to climb down to the Falcon and we also know that Rey took the Ancient Jedi texts with her.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
In all previous movies "Jedi ghosts" could only be seen by and interact with other Jedi, but in this movie "ghost Yoda" was able to summon lightning to destroy the Jedi tree. This ability would not fundamentally alter the course of the Star Wars Universe in the slightest, since the Jedi ghosts generally follow a path of minimal intervention.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
Leia Organa is so powerful with the force that she can fly through space like Superman, yet when the rebels are trapped they must rely on Rey's ability to remove the rocks even though Leia is with them. Clarification: While The Empire Strikes Back established that the weight of the object being moved is irrelevant to use of the Force, it has also established that the perceived weight of objects creates a psychological barrier to anyone untrained in use of the Force. The number of objects and the ability to see an object does have an impact on the ease with which the Force can be used to move things. Moving one object one direction in a weightless, frictionless environment is a relatively rudimentary use of the Force, while simultaneously controlling the movement of several dozen multi-ton objects, some of which aren't visible to the force-user in question is drastically more difficult. Also, one instance instinctive use of the Force under extreme physical duress is not the same as continuous, willful use of the Force.Incorrectly regarded as goofs
The dice toy was projected to Crait by Luke, the original is shown to be on the Falcon. Yet it stays on Crait minutes after Luke died. This also happened with water being projected through the Force into Kylo Ren's hands, so this is probably possible in the Star Wars universe.Plot holes
On the planet Crait, Rose collides with Finn to stop him from committing suicide. Rose passes out. in a few minutes Leia and the crew are looking for an escape route while Luke fights. As they escape, Finn shows up dragging Rose. 2 problems - 1 it is pretty far to drag Rose to get back there that quick, he would have to be dragging her right past Luke fighting, Kylo's ship, and right in front of all the AT-M6s to get the best time. 2- there is a long trench where soldiers shot from. Either he went around or would have to lower her then lift her up almost over his head to get past that obstacle.Plot holes
Despite Rian Johnson's excuse that Luke uses Anakin's lightsaber to taunt Kylo Ren, Luke has no way of knowing about Ren's interest in the saber, it having been lost over thirty years. Ren only ever shows interest in it to Finn, Rey having been knocked unconscious. Finn never interacts with Luke and could not have told Rey about Ren's interest in the saber.Plot holes
The Force projection trick of Luke works, Kylo Ren believes it even when he sees the blue Skywalker-lightsaber, which he and Rey RIPPED APART approx. three scenes before.Plot holes
The dice toy was projected to Crait by Luke, the original is shown to be on the Falcon. Yet it stays on Crait minutes after Luke died.Plot holes
Snoke is so powerful he can generate visions for Rey and Kylo Ren, but he can't feel the Force moving the lightsaber right next to him.Trivia
Mark Hamill and Rian Johnson revealed at a BAFTA screening that Hamill asked to play a CG character, saying that he had done it before (He had previous done CGI work for the computer game "Star Citizen"). In the film he plays the character who puts money inside BB-8 in the Casino scenes.
With the passing of Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels is now the only remaining actor to appear in all the official Star Wars films.
Carrie Fisher was also a well-known writer, whose services were often called upon to act as script doctor for other films. She later began declining such assignments when producers would solicit her story ideas, then hire someone else to actually change the script, and use Fisher's ideas without paying her. However, director Rian Johnson revealed that Fisher helped with the writing of the script for this film.
After first completing the arduous 600-foot climb on Ireland's Skellig Michael island, Mark Hamill had hoped that he could avoid having to repeat the trek for additional scenes if he could somehow remain on the summit overnight, thus forfeiting the luxury of room service at his hotel. He suggested sleeping in a tent and 'staying in character.' However, after some inquiries were made with the Irish authorities, he was told by producer Kathleen Kennedy that he was not permitted to pitch a tent because the location is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.
"I changed my hair" was a line that Carrie Fisher ad-libbed herself.
According to director Rian Johnson, the Porgs were the result of puffins being native to Skellig Michael, the island where the Achto scenes were filmed. They were unable to move them as they are a protected species and it would've been too time consuming and expensive to edit them out of the shots, so Rian decided to create a new indigenous species and simply CGI over the puffins.
Daisy Ridley took her father to the set in Ireland, where the ending scene of Star Wars: Episode VII - Das Erwachen der Macht (2015) was about to be recreated. When her father met Mark Hamill, he asked him, "Who do you play, then?" Ridley admitted she was not sure if her father was joking.
This was the first film in the series in which Kenny Baker was not involved in the portrayal of R2-D2. Jimmy Vee was given the job, shortly before Baker's death.
When filming, Laura Dern said "pew" every time she shot her blaster. Although not audible, one such instance even made it into the finished film. It can be noticed in the close-up shot when Holdo is stunning her opponents.
Although Disney decided not to use George Lucas's story outlines for Episodes VII, VIII, and IX after the purchase of his company, a couple of Lucas's ideas surfaced in this film, including Luke Skywalker living as a recluse and training a female Jedi (in Lucas's outline her name was Kira).
The three Resistance fighters who pop up from the trenches on Crait are Mark Hamill's children.
Luke Skywalker bears a strong resemblance to Obi-Wan Kenobi's appearance in the original Star Wars trilogy. In fact, Mark Hamill reprised his role in 2015 at the age of 64, while Sir Alec Guinness was 63 when he was first cast as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
After the breakthrough CGI that was displayed in Star Wars: Rogue One (2016) for recreating long gone actors, the filmmakers of this film saw fit to issue statements ahead of release, shutting down any speculations (or worries) on the possibility of such a technology being used for the late Carrie Fisher. In short, all her scenes (barring the stunts) are categorically hers, including the dialogue.
Ewan McGregor expressed his interest to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in this film. Rian Johnson wanted to include him, but could not find a place in the story to naturally insert the character.
General Leia Organa's Mon Calamari cruiser bears the name "Raddus," named for the character of Admiral Raddus in Star Wars: Rogue One (2016).
Kelly Marie Tran did not tell anyone she was doing the movie and lied that she was doing an indie film in Canada. At one point, she got some maple syrup to bring back to her parents so they would believe she was actually in Canada.
Joaquin Phoenix turned down the role that eventually went to Benicio Del Toro.
The door to Luke's hut on Ahch-To is made from the wing of his X-wing.
Rian Johnson's original cut of the film exceeded three hours. Reports say he cut between 45 and 60 minutes to get the film down to a more palatable run time.
With a running time of 152 minutes, this is the longest movie of the Star Wars saga. The previous record was held by Star Wars: Episode II - Angriff der Klonkrieger (2002), with 142 minutes.
As of 2017, this is the only film in the Star Wars universe to not feature the popular phrase "I have a bad feeling about this" spoken audibly. Obi Wan says it in Episode I, Anakin says it in Episode II, Obi Wan says it again in Episode III, Luke and Han say it in Episode IV, Leia says it in Episode V, Han says it again in Episodes VI and VII and K2SO starts to say it but is cut off in Rogue One. Director Rian Johnson has stated that the line is said by BB-8, but since he speaks in droid language, the line is not actually heard.
This is the eighth Star Wars film to be scored by John Williams.
There was a lot of discussion about how Captain Phasma's face should look under her helmet. It was Daisy Ridley who suggested that her eye should appear unscarred and human.
Luke Skywalker blowing the walls apart in the hut when he sees Kylo Ren and Rey Force-connecting was a practical effect. It was achieved with fake bricks on wires.
Luke Skywalker refers to a lightsaber as a "laser sword." The only other character in the saga to do so was Anakin Skywalker in Episode I.
Gwendoline Christie was trained in fighting by swordmaster C.C. Smiff, the same stuntman who had trained her for her fighting scenes in Game of Thrones - Das Lied von Eis und Feuer (2011).
For the sequence where Kylo Ren connects with Leia Organa before choosing not to fire, editors used the same three frame dissolves used in The Empire Strikes Back between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
Carrie Fisher's dog Gary Fisher appears in the casino. When Rose and Finn are talking, he is visible on the left side of the screen beneath the man in the black fez. Rian Johnson confirmed this after a fan spotted the dog in a production still.
Rian Johnson was offered the chance to direct the next film in the saga, Star Wars: Episode IX (2019) based on executive reactions to early versions of this film. Johnson turned down the offer due to the film's tight production schedule. Lucasfilm then offered him a three picture deal to create his own trilogy set in the "Star Wars" universe.
According to stunt coordinator Liang Yang, the lightsaber movements Daisy Ridley performed usually take three days to learn. However, Ridley was able to learn them in only one and a half hours.
This was Carrie Fisher's final film; she died in December 2016.
In keeping with a long-time series tradition, the opening shot after the text crawl shows a space vehicle flying either away from or toward the screen (in this case, several Resistance transport ships fly towards the screen).
Luke Skywalker mentions Darth Sidious by name, the only throwback to a name that only appeared in the prequel trilogy (Though Darth Sidious appears in Das Imperium schlägt zurück (1980) and Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter (1983), he is only referred to as the Emperor). It is likely that Luke learned the Sith title of Senator/Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine, a name also used only in the prequel trilogy, by conversing with the Force ghosts of Obi-Wan or Yoda sometime between Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter (1983) and Star Wars - Episode VIII: Die letzten Jedi (2017)
Director Rian Johnson admits that he moved Kylo Ren's facial injury. In Star Wars: Episode VII - Das Erwachen der Macht (2015), Rey slices his face with her lightsaber, giving him a laceration that goes across the bridge of his nose. In this film, the injury has scabbed over, but is now over his right eye. Johnson says a scab over his nose did not look right. Coincidentally, the placement of the scar matches a similar injury on Anakin Skywalker, in Star Wars: Episode III - Die Rache der Sith (2005).
The production name for Episode VIII is "Space Bear."
The location filming in Ireland was intended to follow on from the dark Skellig ending of Star Wars: Episode VII - Das Erwachen der Macht (2015). However, the weather was unseasonably good and shooting took longer than expected.
R2-D2's hologram of Princess Leia was re-created with original footage shot for A New Hope.
Original burn marks are still visible on Luke's mechanical hand.
Lawrence Kasdan initially wrote a story outline for the film, but was called away to work on Star Wars: Episode VII - Das Erwachen der Macht (2015) when problems arose with that film's initial script. When Rian Johnson signed on as director, he requested to be allowed to scrap Kasdan's story and write his own script from scratch, to which the producers consented, as Kasdan's outline no longer matched up with the finished storyline of the previous film.
Production designer Rick Heinrichs said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the original screenplay by writer-director Rian Johnson was so ambitious that it had double the number of sets you might expect on a film like this. "The original script had about 160 sets in it, a ridiculous amount of sets. I didn't say that to Rian, because I figured on something this big he'll find that out on his own. It's a 100-day shooting schedule," says Heinrichs. "So there's more than one set a day you have to prepare for." In the end, the production settled on 125 sets on 14 stages at Pinewood Studios.
